FREMDSCHLAFEN

2010

For FREMDSCHLAFEN, I spent a night in each participant’s home, sleeping on a sofa or guest bed. The evening before, I prepared the photographic setup so that the portrait could be made immediately after they woke up, at an agreed time. They were photographed exactly as they had slept — in the same clothes, before dressing, styling or otherwise preparing themselves for the day.

The series explores a brief threshold between the private and the public self: a moment before appearance becomes presentation. In sleep and in the first moments after waking, the codes through which we usually shape how others see us temporarily recede. What remains is something more unguarded, intimate and ordinary.
